Movie Review: Backrooms
This past weekend I went to see Backrooms, a new movie from A24 directed by Kane Parsons.
I’m not going to lie, I went into the movie with the intention of hating on it. I’ve never been interested in the Backrooms lore.
That being said, I did end up enjoying the movie. The actors all played their roles well, especially Chiwetel Ejiofor. The pace was great, the story was there, and the third act was surreal and satisfying.
In my opinion the best part of this movie came after watching it. I found myself thinking about what my own Backrooms experience would be like, which deeply disturbed me.
* SPOILERS AHEAD *
I started wondering how the Backrooms would “remember“ me and how it would depict that “memory.” I thought about how horrifying it would be to encounter that bizzaro version of myself. What would it have gotten right and wrong? Creeps me out just thinking about it.
The bizarro “Pirate Clark” reveal was cool. It kind of reminded me of a scene from Evangelion where you see the big eyes and teeth of EVA Unit 01.
Overall, I liked it. I would recommend and watch again.
Score: 7.5 / 10
